The General Cafe Kangaroo Valley is a modern and relaxed cafe/restaurant in the village of Kangaroo Valley.
We produce honest and nutritious food and beverages with slight quirks. It’s the new black… We like to keep it hand made, local, fresh and sustainable.
We have a tiny shop (check out Handcrafted @ The General) that sells what we love to eat, make and dig out of our and our neighbours’ gardens.
We have outside seating on our verandas, love dogs and love people. Come and visit us.

The General Vibe
We start the day with setting the grind, fermenting, baking, house music, world music, local ingredients and local talent… all blended into a mix that we hope nourishes our community. Our ovens are rolling at 4.20am with Mrs Bread’s pop up bakery sneaking into the kitchen before chef puts on his starchy whites. Mrs Bread bakes our organic sour dough bread and also supplies the local general store.
Food offerings change on a regular basis in tune with the best produce available – avocado, tomato, fresh cheese and rye, a local favourite, free range scrambled eggs with a delicious array of sides, Chinese Bolognese, raw zucchini noodle and Ploughman’s Lunch are standard offerings.
Tony’s a chef in tune with natural taste and textures, his experience stretches from The Bayswater Brasserie, to ashram cooking and to his own Two Hatted award winning Lochiel House restaurant he owned with Mrs Bread for 11 years. Tony also has a passion for kombucha and has started fermenting and bottling his own delicious range which is available in the Cafe and from our little shop.

Kombucha (organic)
All small batch fermented, made with quality, all natural organic ingredients and very much alive. Flavours include Turmeric & Ginger and Green Tea with Strawberry, Blackberry, Beetroot and other whimisical additions with the seasons. A bubbly taste sensation.
Sauerkraut
Fresh vegetables are magically transformed through fermentation into a tangy taste sensation.
Pickles
Fresh and usually seasonal ingredients combine to make a tasty accent to any tasting plate or sandwich.
Fresh Cheese
Local milk is made into a fresh curd that is lightly marinated with thyme and garlic from our garden.
Flax Seed Wafer
Blended flax, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, dried ever so slowly to preserve valuable oils and flavour.
Sour Dough Bread (organic)
A la Mrs Bread who ferments and tends her ‘mother’ dough and lovingly combines this with organic flour to produce a wonderful tasting and textured bread. Rustic baked masterpieces include sour dough loaves, baguettes (uses 50% sustainable non organic flour) and loaves for two.
Supa Dukkah
A flavoursome combination of nuts, seeds, nori and herbs. The uses for this pantry star are limited only by the imagination!
Cashew Cream
Cashews and nothing but the cashews are freshly ground to create a wonderful creamy sensation. A great dairy free alternative to cream.
Milk Shake Syrups
Starting with a base of vanilla bean and organic sugar syrup, real fruits are then added to create flavours of strawberry, tonka bean, cacao and carob.
Compliments to The General
Popped in here yesterday for a coffee and was blown away! I haven’t had such an amazing coffee in a long time (I had to have another one). Came back today for coffee and breakfast, and we were not disappointed!! The food, the coffee and the staff are just outstanding. Would come back again and again!!
Sophie (via Facebook)Went here for breakfast had the best quiche I’ve ever had. Quality food and quality service 10/10. Couldn’t leave without buying some super dukhah!!
Natalie (via Facebook)More lovely compliments can be found on the web!
We were a group of 10 people and had breakfast here. It was a lovely experience overall. Food was delicious, service was extremely friendly and atmosphere was really nice. They have the best dukkah and I also loved the way they did mushrooms. Will definitely recommend this place to others.
